Haitian Entrepreneurial Resilience
Photographic Assignment
The images published here were taken as part of the LEVE Project (USAID).
Aout 2019
Port-au-Prince, Saint-Marc, Cap-Haïtien (Haïti)
- As part of a photography assignment, I documented the LEVE project, a USAID-funded program aimed at strengthening small and medium-sized Haitian enterprises and creating job opportunities across several regions of the country, including Port-au-Prince, Saint-Marc, and Cap-Haïtien.
Through my photo reports carried out in the North and Port-au-Prince, the capital, I had the opportunity to meet and photograph passionate and experienced Haitian entrepreneurs working in various sectors textiles, agribusiness, services, crafts... Many of them are based in provincial areas, often overlooked but rich in economic vitality.
Discovering their journeys also meant realizing their importance to our country. Their work doesn’t just create jobs it actively contributes to transforming local communities. This project allowed me to witness how strategic partnerships and practical training can enhance the efficiency, productivity, and safety of Haitian enterprises.
But this fieldwork also stirred a deep sense of concern. Due to the ongoing crisis, many of the entrepreneurs I met have since been forced to shut down or leave the country. This is a painful reality to confront especially because these individuals carried within them a breath of hope and possibility for Haiti.
Through this series of photographs, I observe the gestures, faces, and workspaces of women and men engaged in economic activities that are often invisible.
This project enabled me to document not only professional practices, but also life journeys, daily efforts, and a determination to build despite uncertainty. These images carry the traces of a country in motion sometimes fragile, but profoundly alive.
